Alappuzha also known as Alleppey, is a town in Alappuzha District of Kerala state of southern India. A town with picturesque canals, backwaters, beaches, and lagoons, it was described as the one of the places known as "Venice of the East" Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala with the unending stretch of paddy fields, small streams and canals with lush green coconut palms, was well known even from the early periods of the Sangam age.

The famous Chettikulangara temple is at Mavelikkara in Alappuzha district. Arthunkal church and Edathuva church are famous Christian worship centres in the district. Cultural events in Alappuzha include the Chambakkulam Moolam boat race, Chettikulangara Bharani and the Nehru Trophy boat race.

Alappuzha is now the hub for backwater tourism in Kerala. Houseboats locally called "Kettuvallam" are available for hire on a daily basis as well as for longer durations to take visitors on the old waterways. These houseboats in general have two bedrooms and attached bathrooms. Some of the boats have the bedrooms fitted with air conditioners. A routine trip includes food cooked on board in the traditional Kuttanad style. Alappuzha is unique in that it is the only district in Kerala without forest.Snake boat races are a traditional event in Alappuzha. These spectacular regattas are usually held between August and October, and involve long thin boats powered by up to 120 oarsmen. The most famous snake boat races are the Nehru Trophy Boat Race and Champakulam Moolam Boat Race.



Tourist Attractions in Alleppey

Alleppey Beach

Alleppey has one of the best beaches in Kerala and every tourist visiting Alleppey spends several hours strolling along this clean beach in Kerala. Alleppey beach is also one of the most popular picnic spots in Kerala.

Kuttanad

Kuttanad is a favored tourist destination for tourists in Kerala as the place boasts of having several fully furnished houseboats and tourists are seen cruising along the backwaters in these house boats. Kuttanad is also called the rice bowel of Kerala and is one of the few places in the world where cultivation is done below sea level. A visit to Kuttanad offers the tourists a chance to mingle with the local population and learn their customs and traditions.

Sea View Park

Sea View Park is also another important tourist place in Alleppey to visit. The park offers boating facilities and a swimming pool and is also a one of the major picnic spots in Alleppey as it is located on the beach.

Champakulam Church

The Champakulam church is one of the oldest churches in Kerala and is dedicated to St. Mary. St. Mary’s church at Champakulam is one of the seven churches established by St. Thomas the apostle and is an important pilgrimage center in Kerala. The annual feast at the Champakulam church is held on the third Sunday of October every year.

Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna temple

The Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna temple is one of the most important Hindu temples in Kerala and is built in the typical Kerala temple architectural style. The temple is located at a distance of 15 km from Alleppey and this Hindu temple in Alleppey is famous for the paintings that are on display in the inner walls of the temple. Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple is also famous for its Palpayasam, a deliciously sweet milk porridge.

Coir Factories in Alleppey

Alleppey is famous for its coir industry and there are several coir factories in Alleppey that manufacture coir for the domestic and international market. Many tourists arriving in Alleppey visit coir factories to learn about coir manufacturing process. Most coir factories allow free entrance to tourists. Coir factories are an important tourist attraction in Alleppey and a "must see" destination for all tourists visiting Alleppey.

Houseboat Cruises

Kerala Houseboats also called Kettuvalloms in Kerala are an important feature of Kerala tourism. These houseboats are on average over eighty feet in length and feature all the comforts of a modern day star hotel. A luxury house boat comes with clean and hygienic toilets, swimming pool on upper deck, a balcony for angling, open lounge, kitchenette, well furnished bedrooms, air conditioners, and a crew comprising of two oarsmen and a cook.
