Adalaj Step-well or Rudabai step-well is an ancient step-well located in the small town Adalaj, closely located to the Ahmedabad city of Gujarat. It is a beautiful exemplary of Indian architecture, it is stated that Rana Veer Singh of the Vaghela dynasty ruled this region and was attacked by Mohammed Begda, Muslim ruler. The Rana Veer Singh was killed and region was occupied by invader, the beautiful wife of Rana Veer Singh named as Rani Roopba agreed to marry Mohammed Begda in condition that he will first complete the construction of Step-well. When the construction was completed which was started by her husband, she decided to end her life and jumped into the Step-well showing devotion to her late husband. These events are depicted on the walls of the well. Begda however allowed the well to remain without any defacing.

The step-well was built from sandstone in Solanki architecture, it is five stories deep and octagonal in plan at the top. It houses many intricately carved pillars, decorated walls with aesthetic artwork and each floor is beautifully carved. The shape of well is square shape and from the top open to sky. Such step wells were once integral to the semi-arid regions of Gujarat, as they provided water for drinking, washing and bathing. These wells were also venues for colourful festivals and sacred rituals.
