Gir Forest National Park in Sasan Gir, Gujarat

Gir National Park or Sasan Gir National Park is Wildlife Sanctuary located near the Talala Gir in Gujarat State of India. The Park is situated around 43 km away from the Somnath and 60km away from Junagadh. The whole Forest is spread over a vast area of 1412 sq. km out of which 258 sq. km is highly protected area for the National Park and 1153 sq. km is reserved for Sanctuary. The Forest Area of Gir National Park was the hunting grounds of the Nawabs of Junagadh. After the severe fall in Lion Population in Gir, Nawab Sir Muhammad Rasul Khanji Babi declared Gir as a "protected" area in 1900. The Gir National Park was later established in 1965.

Its region is the sole home of the Asiatic lion in the wildlife, it is also considered to be one of the most important protected areas in Asia due to its supported species. The Sanctuary counts 2,375 different fauna species which consists of around 38 species of mammals, around 300 species of birds, 37 species of reptiles and more than 2000 species of insects. The Carnivores includes Asiatic Lion, Sloth bears, Indian leopards, Indi cobras, jungle cats, striped hyenas, golden jackals, Indian mongoose, and many more. Herbivores are chital, nilgai, sambar, wild boar, etc. More than 507 Flora species were counted in the National Park during the survey, it is also an important biological research area.
