Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady, Kerala

Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is located near Thekkady in the districts of Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta in Kerala State of India. It is protected area for mainly Elephant and Tiger spread over the area of 925 square km. It is located high in the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the south Western Ghats along the border with Tamil Nadu. It was declared as the National Park in 1982 and it is reservoir of rare, endangered flora and fauna species. Park forms watershed of two major Rivers of Kerala, Periyar and Pamba.

Park is home to 35 mammal species mainly it is Elephant and Tiger Reservoir including white Tiger, other are gaur, sambar, wild pig, Indian giant squirrel, Travancore flying squirrel, jungle cat, sloth bear, Nilgiri tahr, lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Salim Ali's fruit bat, stripe-necked mongoose, and Nilgiri marten. Around 266 species of birds including migratory birds, 45 species of reptiles, Amphibians, 40 species of Fishes and many insects are recorded in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. There are many hundreds of flowering plant taxa, including about 171 species of grass and 140 species of orchids.
