Gateway of India in Mumbai, Maharashtra

The Gateway of India is monument located in Mumbai city of Maharashtra State of India. This structure is built in 20th century to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Marry at Apollo Bunder on their visit on 1911. Foundation stone of this exquisite monument was laid on 31st March 1911and completed in 1924. The final design of George Wittet was approved in 1914 and complex was built wonderfully in Indo-Saracenic style making it must visited site. Gateway of India is top attraction in the city of Mumbai and visited by large number of people. Gateway of India is situated on the waterfront at Apollo Bunder area at the end of Chhatrapati Shivaji Marg in South Mumbai and overlooks the magnificent Arabian Sea.

The Gateway was later used as a symbolic ceremonial entrance to India for Viceroys and the new Governors of Bombay. It served to allow entry and access to India. The monument's design is a combination of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. The arch is of Muslim style while the decorations are of Hindu style. The gateway of India intricately built from yellow basalt and reinforced concrete. The structure is an arch made of basalt, 26 metres high. The central dome is 15 meters in diameter and 25 meter high. On each side of the arch, there are large halls with the capacity to hold 600 people.
