Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu

Meenakshi Amman Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Parvati known as Meenakshi and her consort Shiva. Temple is located on the southern bank of the Vaigai River in Madurai city of Tamil Nadu state of India. Meenakshi Temple is famous and most attractive site of Madurai city. Temple was built during 1623-1655 CE. According to Legends Meenakshi temple was originally built in the 6th century BC by survivors of the Kumari Kandam. In the 14th century, the Sultanate Muslim Commander Malik Kafur damaged the temple. It was rebuilt by the Nayak ruler Vishwanatha Nayakar around the 16th century. It was Vishwanatha Nayaka who rebuilt the temple in accordance to shilpa shastra.

Meenakshi Temple houses 14 gopurams, ranging from 45–50m in height. The tallest is the southern tower which is 51.9 metres high, and two golden sculptured vimanas, the shrines over the sanctums of the main deities. There are around 33,000 sculptures in the temple and it is one of landmark of the city. The temple complex is divided into a number of concentric quadrangular enclosures contained by high masonry walls. Temple has four entrances facing in all four directions. Gateway Towers or Gopurams are multi-storied structure carved with thousands of stone figures such as animals, gods and demons. The Meenakshi shrine has the emerald-hued black stone image of MeenakshiBoth the Meenakshi and Sundareswarar shrines have gold plated Vimanam. Outside the Sundareswarar shrine in the path from Meenashi shrine there is Sculpture of Lord Ganesh carved from single stone called the Mukuruny Vinayakar.
