Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal in Madurai, Tamil Nadu

Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal is a palace built in 1636 AD by King Thirumalai Nayak, a king of Madurai's Nayaka dynasty who ruled Madurai from 1623–59. This Palace is situated in the Madurai city of Tamil Nadu. Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal is exquisite example of Dravidian and Rajput blend of Architecture style. The present building was the main Palace, in which the king lived. The original Palace Complex was four times bigger than the present complex. The temple is mentioned as one of the wonders of South.

Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal is one of the grandeur sites of the South India. Mahal architecture is finest blend of Dravidian and Islamic style, interior of Palace is extremely alluring and exterior is also wonderfully done up. During the 18th century many structures that were part of this palace were pulled down or incorporated into buildings in the adjacent streets. The palace was divided into two major parts, namely Swarga Vilasam and Ranga Vilasam. The royal residence, theatre, shrine, apartments, armory, palanquin place, royal bandstand, quarters, pond and garden were situated in these two portions. The courtyard and the dancing hall are the major attractions of the palace. Mahal is famous for its large pillars of height 82 feet and width 19 feet. The palace features well-equipped light and sound shows depicting the story of Silappathikaram. Palace is open from 9 AM to PM, lights shows are organised in evening at 6:45 PM- 7:35 Pm English shows and from 8 PM to 8:50 PM Tamil shows are held in the Palace.
