Mahakaleshwar Temple or Jyotirlinga is amongst the famous Hindu Temples of India. Temple is located on the shores of Rudra Sagar Lake in the ancient city of Ujjain of Madhya Pradesh state. Mahakaleshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingams, the sacred abodes of Shiva. The Jyotirlinga shrines are the places where Shiva appeared as a fiery column of light. The shrine is also revered as one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peetham, it is the place where body parts of the corpse Sita Devi falls when Lord Shiva carried it and hence named Shakti Peeth, in total there are 51 Shakti Peeth.
Mahakaleshwar Temple is three-storey temple and main deity of temple Shiva is in the lingam form, believed to Swayambhu, deriving current powers.The idol of Mahakaleshwar is known to be dakshinamurti, facing the South and images of Ganesh, Parvati and Karttikeya are installed in the west, north and east of the sanctorum. The temple has five levels one of which is underground. The temple itself is located in a spacious courtyard surrounded by massive walls near a lake. The shikhara or the spire is adorned with sculptural finery. Brass lamps light the way to the underground sanctum.
The Temple complex was destroyed by Sultan Shams-ud-din lltutmish, present structure was built by the Maharaja general Ranoji Scindia in 1736 CE.
