Khajuraho Temples in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh

Khajuraho Temples consists of a group of Hindu and Jain Temples located in Khajuraho city of Madhya Pradesh, India. The Khajuraho temples are amongst one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and visited by many tourists from various places. The Temples are well-known for Nagara-style architecture symbolism and their amorous sculptures.

Many of the Khajuraho Temples were built between 950 and 1050 by the Rajput Chandela dynasty. The Khajuraho group of temples were dedicated to two religions, Hinduism and Jainism, showing the acceptance of tradition of diverse religions. History says that the Khajuraho temple site earlier had 85 temples by the 12th century, spread over 20 sq. km of area and out of them only about 25 temples have survived which are spread over 6 sq. km of area. Amongst the various present temples, the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is decorated with abundance of sculptures with intricate details, symbolism and expressiveness of ancient Indian art. Out of presently Temples, 6 are dedicated to Shiva, 8 to Vishnu, 1 to Ganesha, 1 to Sun God, 3 to Jain Tirthankars.

The name Khajuraho or Kharjuravahaka, is derived from ancient Sanskrit Khajur means Date tree and Vahaka means bearer. It is said that entrance gate of Temples earlier had two date trees and so named after it. And it is also said tha Kharjuravahaka is another symbolic name for deity Shiva. Khajuraho was ser midst local hills and rivers and legendary deity Shiva and other Gods visited this place for enjoyment and where Gods love to play. The incricate art work symbolically depicts the four goals of life considered necessary and proper in Hinduism - dharma, kama, artha and moksha.
