Taj Mahal in Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Taj Mahal amongst the Seven Wonders of the World located on south shore of Yamuna River in Agra City of Uttar Pradesh. Taj Mahal was founded in 1632 by Shah Jahan a Mughal Emperor in commemoration of his favorite wife Mumtaz. Taj Mahal houses the Tomb of Mumtaz Mahal and it is centerpiece spread over 17 hectares of area. It includes a mosque, guest house and surrounded with gardens. Construction of this beautiful monument is done with white-pearly marble and on this project 20,000 workers were employed with an estimated cost of 32 million rupees at that time the palatial monument completed its construction in 1953.

Taj Mahal is inspiration of True Love Story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. Architecture of Taj Mahal raised its design from traditions of Persian and earlier Mughal architecture.

Tomb - the tomb is center attraction of Taj Mahal. It is a large, white marble structure standing on a square plinth and consists of a symmetrical building with an iwan (an arch-shaped doorway) topped by a large dome and finial. Four minarets frame the tomb, one at each corner of the plinth facing the chamfered corners. The main chamber houses the false sarcophagi of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan as the actual graves are at a lower level. The fabulous feature is that the marble dome that surmounts the tomb. The dome is nearly 35 metres (115 ft) high.

Exterior decoration - the decoration of Taj Mahal is impeccable and finest of Mughal architecture. The decorative elements were created by applying paint, stucco, stone inlays or carvings. Exquisitely carved plinth, minarets, gateway, mosque, tomb, intricate callighraphy on wall and exclusinve marble jali work all elegantly done up.

Interior decoration - interior decoration is phenomenal far beyond traditional decorative elements. Interior is done with flower carving in marble, pietra dura Jali inlay, delicate pierce work, incised paintings, intricate floor tiling, elegant Jali work and graceful archways of Mahal.

Garden - The complex is set around a large 300-metre square charbagh or Mughal garden. The garden uses raised pathways that divide each of the four quarters of the garden into 16 sunken parterres or flowerbeds. The garden is laid out with avenues of trees and fountains.
