Omkareshwar Temple is Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and one of the revered 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. Omkareshwar Temple is located on an island called Shivapuri in the Narmada River, the shape of island is similar to the Hindu symbol Om. It is situated in the Khandwa district of Madhy Pradesh state in India. Omkareshwar is around 20 km from Mortakka, 133 km form Ujjain and 70 km from Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Omkareshwar is formed by the sacred river Narmada. This is one of the most sacred of rivers in India and is now home to one of the world's biggest dam projects. There are two main temples of Lord Shiva, one to Omkareshwar, the Lord of OM sound and other Mamleshwar, the immortal Lord located on south bank of Narmada River. Both the temples are equally sacred and Jyotirlinga of Shiva and has equal importance among their worshipers. As per the Hindu Myth Vindya, the deity controlling the Vindyachal mountain range was worshipping Shiva to propitiate himself from the sins committed. He created a sacred geometrical diagram and a Lingam made of sand and clay. Shiva was pleased with the worhip and believed to have appeared in two forms, namely Omkareshwar and Amaleswara.
